Back On The Road
The weekend came and went pretty fast, especially since I had to leave Sunday morning at 10. It’s 315 miles from north central Phoenix to Window Rock, and full five hours in the car.

What the heck is a haboob? I grew up in the Valley and endured dozens of duststorms and never heard the word until recently. This incorrect description of a sandstorm has apparently made it’s way into weather-speak about Arizona.

It seems like just yesterday that we were celebrating an entire summer without a child drowning. Oh, how things have changed. Already this year, six children have drowned in Mesa alone. That is six too many, and it’s barely May.
As a reporter, it’s my job to cover tragedies of many kinds. It’s not my favorite part, but in a world filled with planes, trains and automobiles, it is inevitable. What gets me through the night is the hope that covering the story as well as I can will reduce the chance of it happening again. It’s small consolation, but it’s something. Child drownings are different. I hate them. They are lifechanging events, not only for the family (who often never fully recover), but for the police officers, firefighters and even the reporters. Child drownings cut to the core of people who don’t even know the child.
So please, please, please, if not for your own sake, for police officer’s, firefighter’s, even your journalist’s please watch your children around water. That pool is no different than a loaded gun.
Wasn’t it cool to see Gordon win at Phoenix a couple of weeks ago? His team really seems to have an advantage with their COT (Car of Tomorrow) program. Heck, after never winning in Phoenix, Gordon may win the fall race at PIR, too.
Just back to the hotel tonight after a terrific boat ride….at 70 miles an hour. Not surprisingly, Scott got us a hookup on a Magic 36 and did that thing fly! We got an early start on the evening because the crew has to be up so early, we had our walk thru at 3:30 and dinner at 4:30. A bunch of the guys from the crew went with us, and it was a good break after some very long days.
